In the Courtyard (2015) Critic Review: Antoine is too depressed to go on playing in his rock band. After wandering in the streets, he decides to seek an occupation. Unskilled as he is, he is lucky to be hired as the caretaker of an old Paris apartment building. He soon proves good at his job, even if he performs it a little eccentrically, and everybody grows fond of him. Antoine also develops a particular friendship with Mathilde, a recently retired woman who lives in the block and whose mental balance is deteriorating...

In the Courtyard Movie Review By MDBReviews

The harrowed are Antoine and Mathilde, and their science gives the element that powers Salvadori's eccentric representation. Antoine is an artist who no more takes delight in music; a profoundly discouraged sleep deprived person, he needs a change. He winds up filling in as a janitor in the loft building claimed by Mathilde and her spouse, Serge, and his misinformed, hapless endeavors to carry out his employment give the premise to a great part of the story.

Weathered down by life, Antoine is too despondent to enforce the complex's rules: He's soon smoking crack with one of the tenants and allowing a homeless man, Lev , to live there illegally. Salvadori's refusal to judge Antoine lends a detached, almost comical air to the proceedings, building to a hilarious sequence where a fastidious architect tenant's model building is eaten by Lev's mutt.

The narrative turns with Mathilde's own mental issues: After a crack appears in her wall, she begins to suspect the foundation's stability may be in danger, and mounts an investigation into the structure's integrity that begins to erode her mental health. As her sanity slips and her marriage strains, the broken Antoine provides emotional support for the increasingly harried Mathilde. It's in the portrait of these compromised individuals' relationship that the film finds its emotional heft.
