Emptying The Skies Movie Review By MDbReviews

Jen Chaney | The Dissolve

Emptying The Skies, a documentary based on Franzen's story that borrows its headline as its title, ultimately makes a more searing imprint on the psyche.

Full Review

Amy Brady  | Village Voice

Emptying the Skies performs a grand and aching love by telling its story with a power that enrages.

Full Review

Neil Genzlinger  | New York Times

A thoughtful bit of filmmaking, one that at heart is not really about birds at all.

Full Review

David Noh | Film Journal International

If you love birds-and who doesn't?-this passionate doc about the danger many of them face is as important as it is heartrending and infuriating.

Full Review

Harvey S. Karten | Compuserve

Of special interest to people already committed to animal welfare.

Full Review

J. R. Jones  | Chicago Reader

The documentary is too prosaic to capture that ecstatic experience, but it provides some interesting detail on the different methods used to trap birds and the harassment faced by the CABS people.

Bruce Demara  | Toronto Star

You are going to shake with rage. That is a very good thing.

24 Days Movie Review By MDbReviews

Mark Jenkins | NPR

24 Days takes strength from real-world specifics. But the most powerful thing about the movie is its rejection of omniscience. The crime it reconstructs is beyond understanding.

Full Review

Jeannette Catsoulis | New York Times

Sadly, "24 Days" isn't nearly as involving as it should be.

Full Review

Peter Keough | Boston Globe

As a suspenseful true crime story, "24 Days" succeeds. As a warning against the ever present dangers of anti-Semitism, it is eloquent and disturbing. It's in combining the two that Arcady mishandles the case.

Full Review

Simi Horwitz | Film Journal International

A suspenseful and compelling film that's all the more powerful because it doesn't shy away from contemporary anti-Semitism in France.

Full Review

Mike D'Angelo | The Dissolve

Despite strenuous efforts, 24 Days fails to make the case that Halimi would be alive now had the anti-Semitism of his abductors been properly recognized.

Full Review

Donald J. Levit | ReelTalk Movie Reviews

Its ending known beforehand, the story nevertheless unfolds as a suspenseful thriller rather than docudrama, much of the credit for which goes to Manu de Sousa's jumpy editing.

Full Review

Adam Nayman | AV Club

24 Days is neither subtle nor particularly sophisticated as filmmaking, but its refusal to reduce lived reality to generic tropes is admirable.

Full Review

Abby Garnett | Village Voice

Would that the film had explored such emotional contradictions in greater detail, but this retelling is more concerned with black-and-white morality, which drains it of suspense.

Full Review

Roger Moore | Tribune News Service

Slack, lacks the urgency that you expect a kidnapping thriller to have.

Just Before I Go Movie Review By MDbReviews

Stephen Holden | New York Times

Lurches along a wobbly line between salacious comic nastiness and nauseating sentimentality.

Full Review

Joe Neumaier | New York Daily News

Courteney Cox's misbegotten project is a comedy-drama that, to Cox's credit, doesn't feel at all like a TV sitcom. The former "Friends" star clearly wanted something special, but sadly the result is ... this.

Full Review

Daniel Eagan | Film Journal International

Cox must have seen something in this screenplay that encouraged her to film it, but whatever that critical element was, it's not apparent in the finished product.

Full Review

Kyle Smith | New York Post

Courteney Cox's directorial debut "Just Before I Go" is a "Garden State" retread in which filthy jokes gradually cede ground to sentimental slush.

What might have turned out to be a movie about comedy only for comedians is instead a funny and engaging look at the most twisted and naked branch of the entertainment world.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck Movie Review By MDbReviews

Mike Hale | New York Times

An exhilarating, exhausting, two-hour-plus film, both an artful mosaic and a hammering barrage ...

Full Review

John Anderson | Wall Street Journal

Mr. Morgen is perhaps the leading revolutionary in American documentary filmmaking, a collagist/synthesist extraordinaire who has channeled Mr. Cobain's physical legacy ... into a work of art completely his own.

Full Review

Scott Tobias | The Dissolve

Morgen's made an impression of Cobain, which is a much more intuitive and vital enterprise.

Full Review

Joshua Rothkopf | Time Out

For a mere 27 years, Cobain's life was unusually well documented, often by himself, and the film feels as vivid as The Devil and Daniel Johnston in delivering an artist's tortured interiority.

Full Review

Sara Stewart | New York Post

As the credits roll, it's hard not to just root for the sensitive, progressive, fiercely creative Cobain and wish that he'd lived long enough to find a little peace of mind.

Full Review

Alistair Harkness | Scotsman

Though Cobain: Montage of Heck is unlikely to be the last word on the subject - the Nirvana legend is, ironically, far too lucrative now for that - it certainly deserves to be.

Full Review

Jonathan Romney | Observer [UK]

The argument for Cobain's brilliance never quite convinces until towards the end, with his MTV Unplugged performance, in which a whole new compelling register to his talent emerges - too late for the film, and alas, for the singer himself.

Full Review

Tara Brady | Irish Times

Montage of Heck has a wonderful handmade feel, not unlike Jonathan Caouette's wonderful 2003 auto-doc, Tarnation.

Full Review

Patrick Smith | Daily Telegraph

Morgen manages to stay clear of hagiography, instead compiling an exhilarating piece of film-making - one that's fully in keeping with Cobain's virtuosity.

Full Review

Geoffrey Macnab | Independent

The film emphasises Cobain's creativity as well as the work ethic that went alongside his well-chronicled drug use.

Full Review

Wendy Ide | Times [UK]

The annoying title notwithstanding, Cobain: Montage of Heck does a decent job of capturing the charisma and restless creativity of Nirvana's frontman Kurt Cobain without getting bogged down in hagiography.

Kung Fu Killer Movie Review By MDBReviews

Chris Sawin | Examiner.com

The versatility of Kung Fu Killer intrigues while the bone crunching action thoroughly satisfies on every level. Kung Fu Killer is a sensational thriller with ferocious action and features Donnie Yen at his absolute best.

Full Review

Dom Sinacola | Paste Magazine

Director Teddy Chan knows his way around a brutal fight scene for sure, and he makes it clear from even the film's first moments that his return to directing after five years will be totally in thrall to the filmmaking dynasties that raised him.

Full Review

G. Allen Johnson | San Francisco Chronicle

This isn't a new golden age of martial arts films, but with Yen holding down the fort in China and southeast Asian fighters Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa, it's a pretty good one.

Full Review

Ignatiy Vishnevetsky | AV Club

Here, in this entertaining, preposterous goof of a kung fu movie, are all those values missing from the mainstream of American action filmmaking ...

Full Review

Aaron Hillis | Village Voice

An undeniably bland film in style and story, despite a few elaborately staged fight sequences.

Full Review

Travis Hopson | Examiner.com

Yen, along with director Teddy Chan, have been taking a few cues from The Raid and the new breed of action flick.

Full Review

Jamie Healy | Radio Times

An efficient thriller that's sure to tick all the boxes for fans of Asian action movies.

Full Review

Leslie Felperin | Guardian

The fight scenes are terrific, but the haphazard plotting, off-the-peg characterisations and drippy music elsewhere lack flavour.
