Reviews By Critics For  'Felix and Meira' (2015)

Peter Sobczynski | RogerEbert.com
It tells a not-especially-interesting story about a not-especially-interesting couple from two different worlds that goes on and on before reaching its not-especially-interesting conclusion.

Stephen Rebello | Playboy Online
Felix and Meira makes fascinating observations on forbidden love and as well as on the Hasidic community. Although its pace is sometimes pokey, it's a movie offering nice rewards to the patient.

Matt Prigge | Metro
Director Maxime Giroux tells his tale in quiet, patient long takes that can be coolly serious at some times and disarmingly deadpan-funny at others.

Jeannette Catsoulis | New York Times
This tenderly observed love story (by the director, Maxime Giroux) isn't about religion - or its lack - but about the attraction of difference and the undeniable need to feel alive.

Ella Taylor | NPR
What's missing here is the vitality and sense of release the couple's romance should bring. Felix and Meira continue to pine and mope; the movie mopes with them in exhausting, often awkwardly intrusive detail.

Mike D'Angelo | AV Club
Félix & Meira eventually proves to have more in common with Fill The Void, and with Burshtein's effort to depict Orthodox Judaism as more than just a women's prison, than it had appeared.

Felix and Meira Movie Review By MDBReviews

Music is utilized sparingly as a part of Felix and Meira, and every melody is vital to communicating implicit feeling. After Shulem  leaves his unobtrusive home in Montreal's Hasidic enclave to go to petitions to God, his wife, Meira , puts on a prohibited record, "After Laughter," letting Wendy Rene's mournful voice pass on her own yearning. At the same time its Leonard Cohen's "Renowned Blue Raincoat" that catches the stunning despairing of Maxime Giroux's sentimental dramatization, where misfortune and acquiescence are as critical as longing and opportunity.

When a dissatisfied Meira meets the aimless Felix (Martin Dubreuil), they have little in common aside from a love of drawing and a religion they view quite differently.

Director Giroux, who co-wrote the elliptical screenplay with frequent collaborator Alexandre Laferrière, views the relationship as an escape from familial obligations as much as a cross-cultural love story.

Cinematographer Sara Mishara catches the ruined magnificence of slim winter light, improving the solemn temperament. The controlled exhibitions of Dubreuil and Yaron steadily uncover the blemishes and qualities of this delicate couple, while Twersky is discreetly decimating as a surrendered spouse who completely comprehends dedication and penance. Felix and Meira, named Best Canadian Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival, offers sympathy over assurance, actually when circumstances require a win big or bust responsibility to a joyfully many, many.
