Dior and I (2015) Critic Review: Dior and I brings the viewer inside the storied world of the Christian Dior fashion house with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons' first haute couture collection as its new artistic director-a true labor of love created by a dedicated group of collaborators. Melding the everyday, pressure-filled components of fashion with mysterious echoes from the iconic brand's past, the film is also a colorful homage to the seamstresses who serve Simons' vision.

Dior and I Movie Review By MDBReviews

Dior And I is an entertaining glimpse behind the curtain of a fashion empire

Garments make the man, so the truism goes. However does the converse hold genuine? Perused a summation of Frédéric Tcheng's immersing narrative and it may appear as though its about a solitary virtuoso, apparel planner Raf Simons, employed to convey a crisp viewpoint to the Christian Dior design house. In execution, notwithstanding, the film is about the numerous hands and heads that cooperate to understand Simons' individual vision, which is itself obligated to the Dior bran.

Even fashionista neophytes have heard the name: Christian Dior founded his iconic clothing line in 1946, and it quickly grew to prominence. Though Dior himself died in 1957, the company has remained a leading light, and just as frequent target, of the luxury clothing industry.

Dior And I isn’t any kind of hard-hitting exposé. Tcheng—who previously co-directed another style doc, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel—is seduced by this exclusive world, and he communicates that allure with undeniable flair. It helps that he seems to have been given unrestricted access to Simons from his first day on the job to the debut (just eight weeks later) of his first haute couture collection.

It's a ticking-clock account: Can a whole season of attire be planned, sewed, and showed in two months' chance, when four months is the standard? The film's generally armada running time permits viewers to feel a refined feeling of the weight Simons and his group are under. Yet for all the enchanting symbolism of surging attire and unthinkably calculated high heels, Tcheng never dismisses the individuals administering each fasten.

A good portion of the film is spent in the Dior atelier, populated by interns—new hires and old hands who speak of their work, and the pressures that come with it, with a potent mix of frustration and reverence. One of the tensest scenes deals with the absence of the atelier’s première, Florence Chehet, when she’s put in the impossible scenario of attending to a client across the ocean in New York and being on hand in the Paris office to assist Simons with dress fittings. It’s gripping to watch this unexpected planning snafu make its way through the chain of command, then ultimately be shrugged off—the vagaries of big business.

At last, everybody included appears to discover the requests of the employment justified, despite all the trouble, and its straightforward why when Dior And I lands at its fantastic finale. Dramatic artistry compensates for a ton, and the introduction of Simons' accumulation rivals Vincente Minnelli in its stunning pomp. Models stroll through a reconstituted Paris house that has been embellished, carpet to roof, with a rainbow's variety of blooms. Conspicuously emphasized visitors incorporate Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Sharon Stone, and Jennifer Lawrence. The garments delight, and everybody from welcomed visitors to the Dior laborers standing simply off the runway—appears to be struck idiotic by the grandeur of everything. It's riches porn, unadulterated and straightforward. Anyhow in this connection it just so happens to be the ideal medicatio.
